Traditionally cartridges are sprayed or hosed off from the outside in which forces dirt deeper into the media reducing the filter capability of the cartridge. Removing the core gives access to the inside of the cartridge and ability to spray hose dirt out of the media, re-opening the media to once again capture dirt.
